WILPF Australia calls for the immediate protection of innocent citizens in Israel & Gaza

“Strategic leadership, not military retaliation, is urgently needed to protect innocent civilians. WILPF condemns all attacks against civilians, which are a crime under international law.”

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) Australia is deeply distressed by the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza.

For several decades global leaders have failed to assist in finding a solution that will protect the lives of people living in this troubled region.

Statements of condemnation reflect the extent of human misery experienced by so many people but strategic leadership, not military retaliation, is urgently needed to protect innocent civilians. WILPF condemns all attacks against civilians, which are a crime under international law.

We agree with the Australian Jewish Democratic Society statement on 9 October which reminds us they have promoted:

“a just solution in Israel and Palestine, one that accounts for the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians in conflict resolution.”

We welcome Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s call for restraint and the protection of civilian lives, and we urge Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to work for an immediate end to all military attacks and the commencement of United Nations sponsored independent mediation.
