Australian Quaker Narrative Embroidery Project – A Hybrid Event
The Australian Quaker Narrative Embroidery Project is a collection of embroidered panels designed to tell the story of The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Australia, through stitch.
Currently there are 26 completed panels, with plans for a total of 40 to be created. CRQ Northside worshipping group has acquired four of the panels for a limited display at the Turner Meeting House.
On 28 June at 12:15, there will be in information session both in person and online, where we will be joined by Quakers who have been involved with organising and creating panels. We encourage Friends to join us then. If there is enough interest, there is potential for arranging a workshop to go over how to create new panels. The panels that will be featured at CRQ are:
The Rajah Quilt: This panel, designed by Catherine Dabron, was stitched by Wilma Davidson and Catherine Dabron. The panel depicts the quilt made by women convicts given a bag of provisions provided by British Quakers when they set sail in 1841 on the ship Rajah, bound for Australia.
A Wonderful Gesture of Love: the creation of quilts by Quaker women in Darwin and sent to East Timor as a message of love, friendship and support, completed in 2003.
Quaker Service Australia: three prominent project initiatives of the aid arm of Australian Quakers, showing women in Cambodia, Uganda and Tamil Nadu, India
Werona, Kangaroo Valley: a place where Quakers, significantly Young (adult) Friends, and others find solace, spiritual renewal, and sanctuary. It was established in 1969.
The panels will only be available for a very limited time, as they are precious, and we need to accompany them when they’re on display.
There are beautiful reproductions of a range of the 26 panels that have been produced as cards. They will be on sale for only $3.50 each.
