Palm Sunday Rally for Refugees – Canberra

March 29 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Free

The annual Palm Sunday rally will be held on Sunday 29th March in support of the just and humane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

The rally will be at 1 pm to 2:30 pm at Civic Square, outside the ACT Legislative Assembly. Community contingents gather at Petrie Plaza (the merry-go-round) at 12.30 pm on rally day.

The Refugee Action Committee (RAC) says, “There are still thousands of asylum seekers in Australia, some of whom have been here for over a decade, who live in constant fear of being deported. Some receive no government assistance, and even if they are allowed to work their temporary residential status makes it very hard to find employment. They are totally dependent on charities for their survival. The theme for this year’s Palm Sunday rally has been expanded to include migrants. This is because public comments about migration often fail to distinguish between refugees and migrants, blaming them for the housing crisis, the cost of living and all manner of social ills. Sadly, there is often a racist undertone to these comments.”

Canberra & Regional Meeting have responded to an email from RAC accepting the offer for faith groups to be given a banner to promote the Palm Sunday rally ahead of time. The banner says, “Refugees and Migrants Welcome here”.
