Quakers Australia recently sent a letter to Foreign Minister Penny Wong on the topic of Australia’s involvement in the United States and Israel attacks on Iran and the importance of the international rules-based order. Below is a summary of that letter.
The international rules-based order, developed over decades by governments and civil society, emphasises multilateralism and diplomacy as better paths to peace and security than military force. Although not without its challenges, this system sets benchmarks for accountability and has been strengthened by countries like Australia.
Recent military actions by the USA and Israel, including attacks on schools, health facilities, oil refineries, and a ship, undermine the foundations of the rules-based order. These violations cannot be justified by Iran’s breaches of international law.
Quakers are concerned about Australia’s involvement in these events, including participation in joint military operations, support infrastructure, and troop deployments. The assertion that Australia acts only in self-defence is questioned.
Leaders who ignore international law shift global discourse toward a “might makes right” approach. We urge Australia to defend the rules-based order—even when powerful allies undermine it—and recognise its duty to protect citizens through upholding global security standards.
