Vigil to Commemorate 75 Years of Nakba

This weekend, Free Palestine Melbourne will be holding a vigil to commemorate 75 years of Nakba.

In 1948, Zionist militias and the army of the newly created Israeli state carried out a coordinated campaign of ethnic cleansing against the indigenous Palestinians. More than 750,000 people were forcibly evicted from their homes and 530 villages destroyed. The descendants of many of these displaced people still live in refugee camps today. Many still have deeds to their stolen property and keys to their lost houses.

Illegal Israeli settlements continue to increase, with more Palestinian homes demolished, more land loss and more displacement.

The Israeli army and police control daily life in the occupied Palestinian territories. The West Bank is subject to military occupation and Gaza still suffers a land and sea blockade. Basic human rights are denied to Palestinians by the apartheid Israeli state.
