Sunday 29 September, 1pm – 3:30pm CRQ CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION, Meeting House
The recent CRQ business meeting agreed to hold a workshop on the Climate Action Plan endorsed by Yearly Meeting in July. The Plan is about action we can take in our lives individually and together at this critical time for the planet and its occupants.
This will be preceded by a shared lunch after Meeting for Worship, please bring something to share. The following quotation gives a useful reminder of what we face:
“Quakers, among others, have always been called upon to act based on conscience and being faithful to the leadings of the Inner Light, irrespective of the seeming impossibility of the tasks ahead, whether it be the abolition of slavery, the prevention of war, the injustices of racial and economic inequalities, or ecological breakdown, knowing that nonviolent action, rooted in love, is ultimately more powerful than separation, division, opposition, and violence.
We do not know what the next decades will bring, and there is no certainty that we will avoid enormous suffering to ourselves and other life-forms, although we cannot ultimately destroy the resilience and capacity of life itself to survive and thrive. We don’t need a false optimism so much as the courage, wisdom, compassion and humility to stay rooted and to keep faith with our commitment to do what we are called to do, grounded in the power of life and love. As Rabbi Tarfon, quoted in the front of this book, reminded us, it is not our responsibility to complete the work, but neither are we to abandon it. As Friends say, we can do no other.”
