Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony
April 16 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
FreeSunday 16 April, 11am: Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony
The Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony is an annual event hosted by the Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group in honour of the Dharawal People who perished in the massacre of 1816. The Appin Massacre was a tragedy of Australia’s frontier wars; remembering this every year is an important part of healing and reconciliation.
The Memorial Ceremony is held at Cataract Dam Picnic Area each year on the Sunday nearest to the actual massacre date of April 17th. We will be meeting from 11am for a community get together and then for the ceremony from about 1pm. Our event will finish at about 3:30pm.
Participants are advised to bring appropriate footwear, hats, sunscreen and bottled water. Fold up chairs are also recommended as seating is limited. Food variety is limited so those with special dietary requirements are advised to bring something of their own. There is accessible parking and a short walk to the memorial site. There will be a bus service for those unable to walk the short distance to the site.
Please contact Peter on 0418 297 056 (Winga Myamly) if you require further information or Carol Thornton (CRQ) 0427 290 040 (CT can email you driving directions if you need them).
